Youth Employment Services:

Nevada’s state and local workforce investment boards and the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, are dedicated to the development of policy and program initiatives to promote training, education, and job opportunities to help youth succeed as lifelong learners, productive workers, and self-sufficient, responsible citizens.

Youth employment programs are funded through the federal Workforce Investment Act –IA Title 1B Youth.

The purpose of employment programs for youth is to enhance opportunities in:

  • Education

  • Occupational and leadership skills

  • School completion or encouragement to return to school

  • Making a successful transition from school to work, for both in and out-of-school youth

  • Post-secondary education and training

  • Apprenticeship programs

  • Military service

Participants:

Youth ages 14 through 21 may be eligible to participate in Nevada’s youth employment programs. Program participants must comply with citizenship and eligibility to work requirements; provide documentation of registration with the Social Security Administration; and if the youth is male –must comply with Selective Service registration requirements.

In addition, youth participants must meet requirements for “low income” and “barriers to employment” eligibility criteria. Up to 5% of youth served through the program are not required to meet the income criteria if they fall into one or more of the barriers to employment categories, e.g., school drop-out, deficient in basic skills, has an arrest record, and similar barriers to employability.

Program:

After registering for a youth employment program and being determined eligible for services, an assessment is conducted to establish which program components are appropriate for the individual participant. The assessment reviews the individual’s occupational and academic levels. Areas explored include basic skills, occupational skills, work experience, employability, interests, aptitudes, support service needs, and developmental requirements. The youth participant and counselors then establish an Individual Service Strategy to identify the participant’s career goals, achievement objectives, and needed services.
