About the Industry

Manufacturing Industry Sector:

Council Members Manufacturing machinery

The production of consumer durable and non-durable goods holds a very important place in Nevada's economy.  Manufacturing firms are not necessarily reliant on local demand for goods and are therefore footloose. Their location then depends more on local factors such as the quality and availability of the labor force, transportation infrastructure, non-wage labor costs, access to innovative technologies, and the cost of doing business.

GWIB Manufacturing Sector Council Strategic Plan 2013

Manufacturing is linked with the other key industries in the state (including mining, energy, logistics/distribution, tourism/gaming, construction, and agricultural sectors).  This  collaboration fosters idea sharing and creates opportunities for growth.

The Manufacturing industry in Nevada employs more than 56,000 workers at over 1,800 manufacturing companies. Printing and publishing and metals fabrication are the largest segments of the manufacturing industry. Other significant segments include electronics, furniture and fixtures, chemicals, industrial machinery and equipment, paper products, lumber and wood, textiles and apparel, rubber and plastics, and transportation equipment.

Manufacturing jobs are highly paid jobs, and manufacturing is an economic driver for all. Nevada’s manufacturing industry is particularly sensitive to shortage of skilled workers. Apprenticeship programs and manufacturing skills certifications are needed to create and maintain an adequate skilled workforce pool.

The mission of the GWIB Manufacturing Sector Council is to identify workforce needs and develop initiatives to educate its workforce in support of the economic development goals of the state.
